A Little History

The 217 area code was one of the original area codes created back in 1947, when the North American Numbering Plan originally went into operation. That is to say that it's existed for almost 80 years—one of the longest-running and oldest area codes in the nation.

As time went on, the population and need for new phone numbers increased to the point where eventually an overlay area code was added to keep pace.

The 447 Overlay: How and Why

In March 2021, the 447 area code came into use as an overlay to the 217 territory. This is where both 217 and 447 cover the same geographic region. Existing numbers retain the 217 designation, but new ones may receive the 447 label instead.

Due to this, ten-digit dialing is now a necessity—even for calls made within the same area. So if you live or do business in the area, you will need to use the entire phone number, including the area code, when you make a call.

Why the 217 Area Code Still Matters Today

Even with the overlay, the 217 area code remains a stalwart part of the region's identity. It is the home of long-time residents. It is the badge of local trust to businesses. And to others, the fact that a call contains a 217 number may give a clue as to where the call is coming from.
